Some people do the right thing when someone’s watching. Bill Rost does it on a Saturday, when nobody is.
Bill is a Material Handler in Bazooka Farmstar’s west warehouse — a role he’s held with dedication for 17 years. This quarter, he’s being recognized as a Bleed Bazooka Gamechanger, and if you ask him how he felt about it, his answer is pure Bill: “Shocked. Because I just thought I was doing my job.”
The Saturday Nobody Forgot
It started when a nominator came into the facility on a weekend and noticed something unexpected — Bill, working in the prep area. That caught their attention right away, because prep isn’t Bill’s typical area. When they walked over to ask what was going on, Bill explained he had come in voluntarily to help the bar assembly team finish a hot order and to hang items in prep so everything would be ready to go first thing Monday morning.
Nobody had asked. He just knew there was work to do, and he showed up.
That alone would have been enough. But there was more.
In a separate situation, the assembly team was working through a hot project — folding up a bar and getting the bumble bee hose alignment right. Bill stepped in to help. And he didn’t just pitch in and walk away. He followed through, tracking down the port blockers needed to make sure that bar could ship to the customer on time.
His nominator said it best: “This volunteer action by Bill is exactly the kind of thing that makes our company special.”
What 17 Years Looks Like
When asked what he believes led to this recognition, Bill doesn’t point to anything dramatic. He describes reading the situation, knowing what needed to be done, and doing it. Seventeen years of experience gives you that instinct — you don’t have to ask what’s needed, you just know.
But Bill is quick to point out that tenure isn’t a prerequisite for that kind of ownership. His advice to anyone hoping to earn this recognition someday?
“Do your job to the best of your ability. Ask if there is anything else you can do to help out beyond just your own responsibilities. Being here for 17 years, I was able to actually just jump in and do — but for those that may not have that ability, just ask.”
It’s straightforward advice. It’s also the kind of thing that sounds simple and is genuinely hard to live out, day after day.
Why He Stays
Bill says what keeps Bazooka Farmstar interesting after nearly two decades is the pace and the variety. “It’s just a fast pace of work and never the same — always something different and different ways to support someone.” In a place like that, the people who thrive aren’t the ones waiting to be told what to do. They’re the Bills — the ones who see a gap and fill it.
Paying It Forward
As part of his Gamechanger recognition, Bill selected Paws and More as his not-for-profit of choice to receive a $100 donation — an organization he’s supported before. “They do a great job for the community,” he says, “and it will also help towards their new facility.”
It’s fitting. Someone who shows up for his team without being asked chose an organization that shows up for animals in need.
