When Bill Rost noticed a movable shelf blocking an aisle while a forklift operator was trying to navigate through the facility, he didn’t hesitate. He didn’t assume someone else would handle it. He stopped what he was doing, got out, and moved the shelf out of the way—no fanfare, no announcement, just action.

“Bill demonstrated what it truly means to prioritize safety by proactively identifying and eliminating a hazard before it could cause an incident,” shared his nominator. “He wasn’t directly involved in the task at hand, but he recognized a safety concern and immediately took action to resolve it.”
For Bill, who works in Shipping and Receiving, this approach to safety isn’t about seeking recognition—it’s simply the right thing to do.
“I was excited,” Bill admits about receiving the award. “I always try to be safe, which isn’t always recognized. Some think it’s a given. At the end of the day, nobody knows when an accident can happen, so if you can help prevent it, everyone can go home safe at the end of the day.”
Advice for Others: See Something, Say Something
When asked what advice he’d give to someone hoping to win this recognition, Bill’s answer was straightforward: “If you see anything that looks like a potential hazard, stop and call it out. Doesn’t mean someone is doing something wrong, but it could be something that could save another person’s life.”
It’s this mindset—that safety is everyone’s responsibility—that makes Bill’s approach so impactful. He didn’t just see a potential problem; he took ownership of the solution.
“I saw something that could possibly happen so I stopped to correct the action so no safety incidents happened,” Bill explains simply.
Beyond the Workplace
Outside of work, Bill’s life is filled with activity. As a father of four kids involved in sports, dance, and church activities, his favorite pastime is “running kids to their events.” It’s a busy schedule that reflects the same commitment to supporting others that he brings to work every day.
When asked to select a not-for-profit organization for his Gamechanger recognition, Bill chose the local Paws & More animal shelter. “They are very good for the community, keeping animals free from disease and caring for animals brought to them to then be adopted,” he says, highlighting another way of making a difference in the community.
